Da die systemische Beratung ihren Ursprung in der Familientherapie hat und Sozialarbeiter und Sozialpädagogen in der Beratungspraxis häufig mit Problematiken konfrontiert sind, die direkt oder indirekt mit der (Herkunfts-) Familie im Zusammenhang stehen, konzentrieren sich die Ausführungen dieses Kapitels auf die systemische Beratung von Familien.
Wenn von Systemischer Beratung gesprochen wird, so ist der Ausdruck gleichzusetzen mit Systemischer Therapie. Von Schlippe und Schweitzer weisen in ihrem Lehrbuch der systemischen Therapie und Beratung darauf hin, dass sie „zwischen systemischer Therapie und systemischer Beratung keine grundsätzlichen theoretischen oder methodischen Unterschiede sehen“ (von Schlippe/ Schweitzer 2003, 15).
Da in der Sozialen Arbeit Beratung und nicht Therapie Anwendung findet, wird in dieser Arbeit der Ausdruck der Beratung verwendet.
